A few months ago, I had an out-of-town mama with a unique situation contact me about doing maternity photos for her. Due to some pregnancy complications she was here in Calgary staying with relatives while she waited on the arrival of her newest little one.

Although, not an ideal way to spend your pregnancy away from home and your husband and young son, Heather made the most of it and not only did we plan out the details of her maternity portraits to pass some of the time, but we also got to know each other on a personal level and connected as moms.

For her maternity session, we arranged it to fall during a weekend when her husband and son would be here visiting her so we could include some sweet big brother and dad-to-be photos. The weekend of Heather’s session was forecasted to be a beautiful spring evening and with her husband and son coming to document these moments with her, I was anticipating a session full lots of hugs, kisses and laughter. Days ahead of our session brought an expected change of plans, and her husband and son we’re not able to make the 8 hour drive that weekend to see her. Because pregnancy is an experience that we are blessed with for such a short amount of time, we went ahead with her maternity session and focused on some mama only and belly photos so she didn’t miss those moments.

Heather is a stunning mama and we got some amazing photos of her loving on her belly. Though, it’s unlikely I will have the opportunity to meet her newborn baby and do newborn photos for them, it was an honour and I was extremely happy to capture those maternity moments for her and bring some happiness to her, in what I’m sure was a hard situation to get through.
