Winter Maternity Sunset Proposal Photo Shoot

Calgary Maternity Photography

So there is a little story to this that I just have to share. When we originally planned Shanlee and Conor’s Maternity Session, they were hoping for snow for their maternity photos since they were having a winter baby. But, our beautiful City of Calgary, and much of Southern Alberta, had other plans and we were blessed with a very warm fall which resulted in no snow for their session. Having a beautiful and warm fall did make for awesome weather for my clients to hang out and be comfy and cozy in during their maternity session, and of course for me to photograph them in. You can read about their story and take a peek at their modern romantic maternity pictures. If you are thinking about booking a maternity session, it’ll give you a glimpse into what a maternity session with me is like and the type of maternity images  we can achieve — beautiful, serene & timeless maternity photography.

Everyone has a vision of the type of images that they want to capture, and it’s a part of my artistry to create those pictures that you desire. I know mama had her heart set on having snow on the ground for some of their maternity pictures, so during our session together, I told them that if snow was forecasted in the near future that I would see what I could do to meet up and take a few photos with a pretty snow backdrop for them. As it turned out, we got a big snowfall a couple of weeks later, so I reached out to them and we set up a date and time to take a few more pictures with the snow to add to their maternity gallery.

Prior to meeting up to take their winter maternity pictures, Conor reached out to me with an idea. I bet you know where this is going and let me tell you, it was just the sweetest! He told me that he was going to propose to Shanlee and wanted to know if I could capture his proposal during their winter photo shoot. You guys — it was the sweetest thing ever — and of course I said that I would be happy to do that for him. Conor already had an idea of how he would propose so he told me his idea and all the details, and we discussed the way I would photograph it. Not only did he have the CUTEST idea of how, but he also had the most thoughtful, and meaningful way to include their unborn baby boy.

It was the night before, the night before Christmas Eve, when we had plans to meet up to photograph their winter maternity session with the snow. We met at the same location that I photographed their maternity photos at earlier in the month, Fish Creek Park. Just like at their maternity session, the sun had just started to peek out from behind the clouds giving some of the most beautiful light for one of the most perfect moments that was about to happen for these two.

Once we met up, we made our way down to an area where we previously took pictures at. That yummy sunset light was just starting to set for the evening, but was peeking overtop the hills just enough for us to capture some tender winter maternity pictures.

That day was pretty cold with the added wind chill, and the temperature started dropping even more as the sun was setting so we decided on a single area to photograph them at. With the snow quite deep, I told them that I would have them stay in their designated place and I would prompt them into poses from afar — but really, I wanted Conor’s proposal to be as intimate as possible while still capturing their moment. So, after getting them to do some snuggly couples pictures, I had them move back to back — which was our cue for him to get ready. Once I saw that he was ready, I told Shanlee to turn around to face Conor for a pose. She had no idea what she was about to see, but as she turned around there he was with the baby sleeper in one hand and the ring in the other. It was sweetest proposal — and of course she said YES!!!

It was an amazing moment for these two and I’m so happy to have captured it for them! Congrats Shanlee and Conor on your engagement! It was an absolute honour to photograph your special moment for you, and I wish you two a life-long happiness and love!!!

Leave some love!
